I love Valentine’s Day!
I know, I know…according to Society (who is the living worst, by the way!), since I’m unmarried and without the elusive “Valentine”, I’m supposed to be bitter and perturbed and all, “Happy Single’s Awareness Day!”
Alas, I’m not.
I love this day. I love what it represents…
True, unconditional, love.
I’m not talking about the Hershey kiss, candied heart, dress up in naughty underwear, kind of love. That kind of love is fun and has its time and place in the marriage bed, but that kind of love, the overgeneralized, Valentine’s Day “love”, is emotional…fleeting…misunderstood.
No, friends, I speak of true love…(mental image: The Princess Bride).
True Love: the kind of love Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 13…
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”
Or, the love God shows us through Christ, as seen best in 1 John 4…
This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
This picture of love is the one God desires us to see and the love He gives to us. It’s a love that sacrifices and selflessly gives, a love that lifts up and never asks for a payback, a love that protects and trusts and never fails.
When we love others like this, we make God smile because it’s Him.
God is love (1 John 4:8).
This is why I appreciate this day. What a fantastic reminder of Who loves me and to Whom I belong!
As an unattached and unmarried individual, I cherish these Valentineless days. God has blessed me with time and patience, and while I won’t always be single on February 14th, I value the 2013 Edition: the year I get to bask in the love of a Savior who has first shown me what true, unconditional, patiently kind and humbled love is.
However you celebrate this day, remember that love is something from God and to love others is to love God.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
